A new exhibit presenting the stunning documentary photography of A/A artist Andrew Phelps just opened at Liefhertje en De Grote Witte Reus. For the first time, visitors to "On the Edge: Photographs from Higley and Haboob, 2008-2012" have the unique opportunity to see images from Andrew’s entire photo series capturing the meteoric rise and fall of the housing market in the American West.
While revisiting his own hometown of Higley, Arizona, Andrew takes viewers on a personal journey to witness the aftermath of the town’s transformation. The once seemingly boundless natural landscape has been filled with planned communities and ghostly shells of buildings propped up like so many movie sets against a glowering Western sky. All are unlikely monuments to how the promise of cheap expansion exacted a very real cost on the land and the people who lived there.
The exhibit has already received advance praise in the Netherlands, including an interview with Andrew published at the end of August in De Volkskrant, a leading daily newspaper in Holland.
"On the Edge" will remain on view at LhGWR in The Hague, Netherlands until November 3rd. You can also experience the entire photo series in Andrew’s enthusiastically reviewed books, Higley (2007) and Haboob (2012), available in the A/A Boutique.
