Encountering dangerous situations is a dark reality of urban life. In the June 23rd edition of Berlin’s Der Tagesspiegel newspaper, Andree Volkmann illustrated an article that offered strategies for de-escalating conflict and avoiding violent confrontations.
The article, “Wer bettelt, hat schon verloren” (Whoever begs has already lost), was based on the experiences of a former police officer who once patrolled restless city streets.
For his part, Andree began with a clinched fist and then ringed a muscular arm with scenes of physical abuse, battery, and fighting—in effect a tattoo of frightening scenarios. The bold, simple work emphasizes Andree’s impressive graphic range.
While his work frequently has a humor and playful wit, his firm command of technique allows him to create arresting imagery for a variety of topics. Whether the tone is humorous or decidedly serious, the end result is the same: a memorable image that pulls the viewer closer to the subject matter.
