Selected from more than 500 applicants, Frank Herfort was one of eight finalists for the Grand Prix at Fotofestiwal, an international photography festival in Łódź, Poland. His entry, “Time in Between - Narrative Scenes,” joined a distinguished roster of finalists including Nadav Kander, and this year’s winner, Karl Burke. The jury noted that this year’s competition, the twelfth, “was the most difficult selection in the history of Grand Prix, not only because of the number of received works, but also as a result of a very high and even level” of work, yet they ultimately chose photographers “asking questions about society, future, history and themselves.”
These very questions are explored by Frank in his recent work examining life in contemporary Russia. Frank’s singular talent at documentary storytelling finds incongruous moments in unexpected settings—-whether it’s gigantic overhead power lines interrupting an idyllic picnic scene or a slumbering guard protecting a stuffed elephant in a natural history museum. This latest honor only confirms his skill at capturing startlingly intimate imagery in otherwise imposing industrial and urban landscapes. Until June 16th, visitors to OFF PIOTRKOWSKA Festival Centre can enjoy Frank’s photography as part of the Grand Prix Fotofestiwal 2013 exhibition and selected works are featured on the festival website.
