After a month of travel, photographer René Fietzek has returned to Berlin with a stunning set of photos showcasing brilliantly colorful scarves alongside the vibrant culture and people of India. You can see the results in the Fashion Special in Stern magazine's current issue. One of the highlights of the experience was a visit to the world’s largest religious gathering, the Kumbh Mela, a mass Hindu pilgrimage to bathe in a sacred river. This year’s celebration covered over 50 square kilometers and René attended along with up to 30 million people per day. René says, “For my next visit to India, I’ll take more time, get more rest, and see more nature.”
Rest won’t come easily with René’s busy schedule. Shortly after his trip to India, he worked in a very different chaotic scene: Paris Fashion Week. There he was invited by Vogue Germany’s casting director, Julia Lange, to photograph the sensational newcomers and established favorites of the modeling world. The quiet vulnerability René captured in these photos was no easy task. Imagine a cramped Paris apartment with up to 30 female models rushing from casting to fitting and from show to show. Capturing a single still moment in this context is an accomplishment—but consistently taking subdued, poetic shots is a testament to his talent.
