Rainer Elstermann has been asked to create a series of photographs for renowned artist Simon Fujiwara’s new piece, “Studio Pieta.”
Commissioned for the Sharjah Biennial 11, the piece documents the recreation of a lost family picture showing Fujiwara’s mother in the arms of her lover on a Beirut beach.
The completed installation will consist of a metal cage surrounding a replica of the studio where Rainer photographed models representing Fujiwara’s mother and her boyfriend.
A making-of film and interviews Fujiwara conducted with the models will also be projected onto a backdrop. In addition, ten to fifteen 160-cm photographs by Rainer, documenting different stages in the process of recreating the lost picture, will hang near the bars along the outside of the cage.
The Biennial opens on March 13 with a week-long program of celebratory events in sites across the city of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. “Studio Pieta” remains on display until May 13.
